La "transportation" s'est déroulé de 1887 à 1938. On estime à 70,000, le nombre de prisonniers venant de la métrople ou des colonies envoyés en Guyane. Le bagne fut un echec. La plupart des condamnés moururent sur place et leur sacrifice ne contribua en rien à l'essor de la colonie.*
The "transportation" started in 1887 and ended in 1938. It is estimated that about 70,000 prisoners were sent from France and its colonies. The penal colony was a failure in both human and economic terms. Most of the convicts died and their sacrifice did nothing to help the colony to develop.*
